Donaire in top form ahead of title defense

WORLD flyweight king Nonito Donaire is feeling the effect of his long and rigorous training and is hovering within the flyweight limit just days before he defends his IBF and IBO titles against South African Moruti Mthalane at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

The Arthro Kontra Arthritis-backed world champion, according to his father-trainer Nonito Sr, is now down to 114 pounds, just two over the flyweight limit, and should have no problem making the weight during the official weigh-in on Friday (Saturday in RP).

The main news conference, according to Magna Media, takes place on Oct. 29 in the Border Grill Restaurant around noontime. On Oct. 31, the official weigh in will be conducted in the J-Pop Lounge inside the casino at 1 p.m. and will be open to the public.

Sportsman Jonathan Guardo, who heads the Uniherb group which has tapped Donaire as an endorser, yesterday expressed optimism that Donaire will be able to thwart the capable challenger from South Africa, and come out a bigger star after this fight.

?We are pinning our hopes on Nonito to lift up the Filipino spirit once again. We continue to hope and pray that he will be in perfect shape come fight night, and will come out the victor after the fight,? said Guardo.

Donaire, according to recent reports, is not looking past Mthalane, but should he come out victorious, has been quoted as saying his next target is the super flyweight division where he can challenge other big names such as Mexicans Jorge Arce, Fernando Montiel, and Cristian Mijares.
