Outspoken trainer Richie Giachetti has not been on the championship scene since he and cruiserweight titleholder Steve Cunning went their separate ways.
But ?the greens-eating man from Cleveland? (fight scribe Bob Waters? reference) is still observing and commenting on the passing parade.
Giachetti, whose pugilistic masterpiece was Larry ?Big Jack? Holmes, told Boxingconfidential.com that he belives that trainers Freddie Roach and Jack Loew are overextending themselves at the possible expense of star clients Manny Pacquiao and Kelly Pavlik.
?I see Pavlik?s guy talking about life after Pavlik and about how he has five other guys,? Giachetti said of his fellow Ohioan. ?Look, he needs to concentrate on Pavlik. I know Pavlik and Hopkins is just a money fight but Kelly still makes some mistakes. He should not be taking his eye off Kelly and Freddie, who is a nice guy, should not be taking his eye off Manny.?
Giachetti made reference to Coach Roach recently adding battered Brit Amir Khan to his long list of clients.
?You can only serve so many masters,? Giachetti said. ?It?s like when I was gonna be the manager of Michael Dokes and his trainer. Don King stuck his son, Carl King, in as manager and I couldn?t become the trainer because people would run to Larry and make problems.?
Looking to Saturday night?s Sam Peter-Vitali Klitschko WBC heavyweight title bout in Berlin, Giachetti wonders if VK still ?has the eye of the tiger.
?Peter is a great puncher, no doubt, but I?ve never seen him in real top shape. The trainer, McKenzie (actually Stacy McKinley), he just got stuck in there by King to keep other people out. From what I hear, Peter is his own boss and runs his own camp. That could be why he?s never in proper shape.
?Klitschko is the boxer and he should stick to that. Larry only got in trouble when he tried to slug it out. With Larry, I used to tell him to get the opponent drunk from his jabs and then wait until about the fifth round to mug him.?
