Promoter Bob Arum has put the kibosh, as only he can, on the idea of Mexican ringmaster Juan Manuel Marquez fighting on the Manny Pacquiao-Oscar de la Hoya card Dec. 6 in Las Vegas.
Not having heard Uncle Bob?s grizzly bear from Brooklyn growl in some time, I rang him up for comment on Juan Ma?s publicly expressed desire to make a lightweight title defense on the big show undercard.
Evidently the Top Rank top honcho had not heard about the Golden Boy-promoted Marquez?s wish.
?What do you want?? Arum said in his charmed, I?m sure telephonic style. I told him that Marquez wants to glove up and fight on the Oskie-Megammany show at the MGM Grand.
?Who said that?
?They can forget about it right now,? Arum snapped. ?It would just be an unnecessary distraction and I ain?t gonna for pay it. The whole subject?it?s a nonstarter.?
Obviously, Arum believes in full-scale, no wiggle rim kyboshing.
As far as fighting Dec. 6, Juan Ma might be like those hot people in Hades who want ice water.
Perhaps Marquez figured don?t ask, don?t get. But Arum said you asked, you don?t get.
