San Francisco, CA- Maybe I was wrong! Perhaps the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquaio match set for December is what HBO?s Larry Merchant says it is, ?An event that boxing sorely needs.? Of course, when I look at the fight on paper I see it as a woeful mismatch. All that being said, there was a press release issued yesterday stating that the December 6 card has sold out in less than, are you ready for this, one day!
MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA SOLD OUT!
According to the release dated yesterday, the event sold out 16,000 seats with a ticket total of nearly $17 million! What does all of this mean? This is probably a clear indication of the ?star? status now bestowed upon both De La Hoya and the Pacman. Because at the end of the day this fight is still a mismatch, at least in size.
ARE THEY THE TWO MOST POPULAR?
Was it the popularity of these men? Could it be that seeing this is ?reportedly? Oscar?s last stand, is that the reason why tickets were gone in the blink of an eye? Has Pacman?s flock responded by throwing down mega-bucks just to see their guy get hammered?
MARKETED LIKE A ?RIGHT WING? BOOK?
Like some books that hit the market running, hitting best sellers list and then drying up faster than you can imagine, maybe the tickets were all purchased by ?Ticket Brokers? and casinos. This seems like the most likely scenario. The brokers, or legal scalpers in today?s world, I think they are seeing this as a ?can?t miss? opportunity to gouge both the Filipinos wanting to see Manny, as well as those enthralled by the Golden Boy?s last hurrah.
