Oscar De La Hoya is on the lookout for a trainer ahead of what he insists will be his last fight against Manny Pacquaio on December 6.
The “Golden Boy” was hoping to retain the services of Floyd Mayweather Snr for the welterwight clash in Las Vegas, but the veteran trainer has instead taken on Ricky Hatton ahead of the Englishman’s fight with Paulie Malignaggi in November.
De La Hoya is still holding out hope of sharing Mayweather but says the pair have not spoken since teaming up for the clash with Steve Forbes in May, which De La Hoya won on points.
“I hope I am right when I say there was a misunderstanding that he didn’t know I was going to fight in December,” De La Hoya told ESPN.com. “That’s his excuse, that he didn’t know.
“I’m a bit disappointed, yes, but obviously I have nothing bad to say about Floyd. I respect him as a trainer…but he could just have called and said, ‘Hey, I have an opportunity here with Ricky Hatton’.
“But I don’t hold it against him. If it can’t be worked out, I’m going to move on and get another trainer. It’s going to take a call from me directly to Ricky and say, ‘Hey, what do you think? Can we work something out?’ I think it’s still possible.
“But the time is coming where I have to make a decision and that decision has to be made in a few days.”
