Hello all, welcome to my boxing mailbag. The long gap in between fights is now over. Saturday there are two quality cards, one on Showtime and the other, unfortunately, on PPV. You could say that boxing season in underway, coinciding with the NFL football season. In the mailbag this week I will field questions about Pacquiao vs. De La Hoya, discuss Amir Khan?s disastrous outing on Saturday, and give my thoughts on the Mora/Forrest rematch among other questions. Before I get to that I am going to review some of the key matches set to happen in the near future, from a sports book/gambling perspective.
But why from a gambling perspective Brian? Isn?t gambling wrong?
Yes. Gambling is very wrong; you shouldn?t do it. However, looking at the betting odds posted by sports books is a useful tool when predicting the outcome of a prizefight. By no means do the oddsmakers always get it right. That was clearly seen when Amir Khan, more than a 10 to 1 favorite over Breidis Prescott, was KO?d in the 1st round. But the odds will give you a good idea of whom the ?in the know? public expects to win. With that said, here are odds and my analysis on some marquee upcoming fights:
Joan Guzman -225/Nate Campbell +185. Those odds mean that Campbell is almost a 2 to 1 underdog. At first glance those odds look a little off. After all, Campbell is the recognized Lightweight Champion; THE man in a very deep division. All rankings with any credibility have Campbell as the #1 rated lightweight. He gained that reputation after his clear win over Juan Diaz.
