Boxing group wants head of Buhain

A number of boxing promoters, managers and ex-boxers yesterday called for the resignation of Games and Amusement Board (GAB) Chairman Eric Buhain during a rally in front of the GAB office in Makati.

Aside from Buhain, the group also assailed Dr. Nasser Cruz, GAB boxing division chief, for making life difficult for promoters and boxers.

They alleged that the GAB has been collecting 1 percent from all fighters with scheduled bouts here and abroad and disbursing it without any representative from their group and that the agency hiked the GAB-assigned doctor?s fee to P4,000 from P2,000 without consultation with the promoters and managers.

They also deplored the deployment of undeserving boxers to fights overseas and the practice of assigning GAB officials to judge abroad even if there are GAB-licensed officials.

Buhain, however, shrugged off the rally, saying: “Today is the scheduled consultation and dialogue with them and it was planned as early as two months ago and they were the ones who chose not to sit and talk but to go to the streets. Can you believe that? Sila pa ang ayaw makipag-usap.”

Buhain met with the protesters who also included boxing managers Bebot Elorde, Yolly Alfante and Aljoe Jaro.
