Thank you Team Pacquiao. My deepest gratitude for not participating in the planned December circus act between your man Manny Pacquiao and The Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya. Your decision has opened up boxing calendar to some real competative and entertaining bouts. If the price of selling out was a 60/40 revenue split with the Filipino lightweight taking the short end of the stick, his team was not budging and Golden Boy Promotions would not modify their demanded 70/30 split.
Now boxing fans will be spared from the general public focusing on their sport due to a match-up with no real intrigue or competition. Oscar De La Hoya will have to find some other partner in his yearly attempt to drum-up million of pay-per-viewers.
Before I continue my riff on the old-tired tres called De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao seems to have Humberto Soto in his near future. Pacquiao ? De La Hoya was a little or no hope proposition for Manny, but Soto is no joke Mexican contender and should provide boxing fans with a fight worth watching during November.
Be happy Manny Maniacs, your man now has the opportunity to clean out the lightweight division which is deep with talent and full of explosive confrontations.
What now for De La Hoya? His negotiations with Pacquiao and stubbornness to provide an equitable split of the revenue for a Pacquiao fight has painted him into an ugly corner.
Now with Manny out of the picture, if Oscar does not face Antonio Margarito ? fresh off a monstrous performance against elite welterweight Miguel Cotto ? he will end his career by ducking the best opponent out there. Up to now De La Hoya has never ducked a fighter but if he passes on Margarito, he will have clearly done just that.
We do not want to hear about De La Hoya’s vow not to fight a Mexican and please Oscar, do not try to pull a Miguel Cotto bout over our eyes. Show us the in the ring heart you have always displayed, something your stiffest critics could never question and give Margarito the opportunity to mangle your Hollywood good lucks.
Margarito could provide the answer to a very real question, ?How much talent and heart does Oscar De La Hoya have left??
