Very rarely will you run across a coin that?s identical on both sides. Usually the piece of currency has one side referred to as ?heads? and another referred to as ?tails?. In reference to the proposed December 6 bout between current WBC lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao and ?The Golden Boy? Oscar De la Hoya, there is obviously a head and tail argument for the event.
The Head (Good) is as follows:
Manny Pacquiao will bring the fight and try his best to make it an action packed affair. Similar to what Arturo Gatti did against De la Hoya back in 2001.
There will be drama in the bout as De la Hoya will have the option to ?carry? Pacquiao throughout the night in order to increase the competitive factor. It will lead people to believe that the bout itself was never a mismatch and that they are indeed getting their money?s worth.
The average boxing fan doesn?t scour the internet looking for tidbits in regards to the build-up for a fight. The average fan eats what HBO tells them to eat and this includes storylines in which the bout is now ?personal?.
The ?Pacman? will make a lucrative payday far exceeding anything he?s ever seen in his career.
The Tails (Bad) is as follows:
It confuses the boxing public being that Antonio Margarito has just crowned himself as the monster of 147 pounds, a weight class that De la Hoya & Pacquiao will be competing at. I?ve already heard the casual fan ask, ?Why isn?t De la Hoya fighting Margarito? Aren?t they about the same size??
Manny Pacquiao?s retirement is now imminent being that he will be receiving a payday equivalent to four or five fights within the lightweight division. Imagine the bouts we could have seen between the ?Pacman? and Edwin Valero, Humberto Soto, Nate Campbell, Joan Guzman, and Michael Katsidis.
The mystique of boxing?s current pound-for-pound champion will undoubtedly be destroyed once he suffers a knockout loss to De la Hoya. Idiots will start to question how good Manny ever was which is completely unfair.
From the public?s reaction, it?s just not a fight that the public is intrigued by. 1 + 1 doesn?t always equal 2. It?s strange hearing Pacquiao supporters vote against this bout. The public isn?t that stupid and for some reason they seem to know that Antonio Margarito is the fight that De la Hoya should be searching for.
I really don?t know what to make of the whole situation. Does Pacquiao have a chance against Oscar? I?d say a very slim one depending on how much the ?Golden Boy? wants to bullshit in there. If Oscar comes out as he did against Ricardo Mayorga, Manny would be lucky to see round three.
If De la Hoya chooses to box, perhaps we?ll see a late round knockout or TKO victory for cross over superstar.
For people speculating that Pacquiao has a strong chance at stopping the East Los Angeles native, must I remind you that Oscar has always shown a sturdy chin when facing men bigger than himself. Pacquiao might be a great fighter but the bottom line is that he just isn?t big enough to do much damage to Oscar let alone any full-sized welterweight.
End of Story.
