Manny Pacquiao will demand a penalty of $ 750,000 for every pound that Oscar De La Hoya will weigh in excess of the welterweight limit of 147 pounds once Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) resume talks for a proposed Dec. 6 bout in Las Vegas.
This will be the position that Pacquiao ? through his lawyer Franklin Gacal ? will take when Top Rank chief Bob Arum and GBP Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer start again talks leading to the realization of the mouth-watering clash at the MGM Grand.
“Oscar is too big for Pacman,” Gacal told the Bulletin yesterday. “This is going to be a tough fight and the (agreed) weight should be 147 pounds or else (let?s) forget about it.”
“If there?s no penalty, Oscar might come at 150 plus and this is not a (world) championship fight, I believe.”
Although the 35-year-old De La Hoya doesn?t hold even one world title at 154 pounds, he is regarded as the best in the division that lists Sergio Mora of the US (WBC), Daniel Santos of Puerto Rico (WBA), Verno Phillips of the US (IBF) and Sergeii Dzinziruk of Ukraine (WBO) as world champions.
“The fair revenue sharing must also be ironed out,” added Gacal, obviously referring to both boxers? cut in the ticket and pay-per-view sales that is expected to shatter records.
Pacquiao has arrived in Los Angeles after leaving Manila late Monday night with wife Jinkee and the kids.
“I still have no idea about what?s been discussed about the De La Hoya fight that?s why I am personally going there to know,” said Pacquiao.
Arum is bringing over the Pacquiaos to Sin City on Tuesday.
“Manny, Jinkee and the kids are going to be flown here from Los Angeles at 1 p.m. on a private plane and in the afternoon, we will talk.”
Yesterday, Arum said he has to know what?s on Pacquiao?s mind before he meets again with Schaefer.
“I won?t talk to anyone until I talk with Manny,” said Arum, who has put Mexican Humberto Soto and Venezuelan Edwin Valero on stand-by just in case the De La Hoya fight doesn?t happen.
Pacquiao currently reigns as the WBC lightweight (135 lbs) champion and is willing to jump up in weight to engage De La Hoya in a megabuck match, while De La Hoya has fought extensively the last ten years not only at welter and super-welter but in the middleweight division as well.
De La Hoya has agreed to meet Pacquiao at 147 lbs but might not be aware of the hefty fine that Team Pacquiao will impose on the contract.
Earlier reports say Pacquiao wants a $ 20 million prize to fight De La Hoya.
Following the devastating defeat of Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico over the weekend, Pacquiao?s chances of securing an unprecedented payday loomed larger since Antonio Margarito of Mexico, who beat Cotto black and blue, is not the type of fighter De La Hoya would like to have for his swan song.
