DONAIRE LOSES TO SOLIS; CHAVEZ, JR. BARELY WINS

FILIPINO-American Glenn Donaire lost a 12-round unanimous decision verdict to world lightflyweight champion Ulises Solis at the Palenque Expo in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.

The judges surprisingly handed out a shutout verdict for the hometown champion despite what observers believe was a close bout.

After a probing opening round Donaire went to work the following round by hitting Solis with a good right that forced the Mexican to the ropes. The two exchange stringent blows until the end of the round.

Donaire continued his attack and connected some clean right straights to Solis? face.

A headbutt in the fourth round caused a nasty gash on Solis left eyelid but the Mexican?s cornerman did a fine job on that cut along the way.

Donaire became more aggressive by the 7th round and was already stalking and hitting a backtracking Solis with more clean shots.

The next three rounds saw Solis cleverly using his ring generalship as he started to find his mark via his remarkable counter-punches.

It was Solis? seventh successful title defense of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) 108lb crown, the last three against Filipinos to improve his overall record to 27-1-2, 20 knockouts. Donaire drops to 17-4-1, 9 KO?s.

CHAVEZ GETS BY VANDA!

Son of the Legend Julio C?sar Chavez Jr (37-0-1, 29 KOs) had all he could handle against Matt Vanda (36-7, 21 KOs) on Saturday night in Hermosillo, Mexico, taking a hard fought split decision in a jr middleweight bout.

Junior was in command over the first half of the fight, but Vanda came on strong and it was an exciting toe-to-toe war over the last five rounds. Chavez was totally gassed near the end of the fight.

Scores were 97-93 Chavez, 96-95 Vanda, and a preposterous 100-90 for Chavez.
