Manny Pacquiao is set to clash with Ricky Hatton after beating David Diaz last night to win the WBC lightweight title.
Pacquiao clinched his fifth world title after knocking out Diaz with 36 seconds left in the ninth round in Las Vegas.
The Filipino made a blistering start, opening up a gash above Diaz’s right eye and across the bridge of his nose.
Pacquiao, 29, ended the fight with a crunching left jab on Diaz’s chin that sent him crashing to the canvas.
His promoter, Bob Arum, said Pacquiao is keen on a showdown with Hatton next year.
“We will defend the WBC lightweight title later this year,” Arum said.
“There is a possibility we could fight Ricky Hatton next year. That remains to be seen.”
Pacquiao, who has won titles at flyweight, super bantamweight, featherweight and super featherweight, said his achievements are beyond his wildest dreams.
“I am happy for the win tonight. I never thought I would win four world titles in four different classes,” Pacquiao said.
“I feel great at this weight. I feel stronger at 135 pounds than at 130. He did hurt me one time during the fight. David Diaz is a very strong fighter.”
