World Boxing News has learned that Manny Pacquiao looks to be returning after losing the Philippine Senate election.
Mario Barrios’ trainer, Bob Santos, has regularly informed WBN of the situation. The former Trainer of the Year had his fingers crossed that the boxing legend would give the green light once the voting process was over.
After contacting Santos in the wake of the election result, the coach is optimistic about an imminent deal.
“Well, Pacquiao didn’t win the (Philippines) election, so I think we should have confirmation one way or the other pretty soon if he’s going to fight or not,” Santos told Worldboxingnews.com.
“It certainly looks that way. Thank God, huge job opportunity,” he added.
Before the result of Pacquiao’s bid to return to politics, Santos seemed unsure. He stated, “That’s exactly what’s going on, so I just pray everything works out, but no two ways about it.
“I would love the Pacquiao fight, and I pray everything goes through. We’ll see until I hear an official announcement from Al Haymon and Sean Gibbons. I guess I’ll keep praying.”
The boxing gods have answered those prayers, as Pacquiao vs. Barrios has a clear path for July 19 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Barrios will defend his WBC world 147-pound title against the oldest welterweight champion ever.
WBN’s Fighter of the Decade for 2000 to 2009, defeated Keith Thurman on July 20, 2019, via split decision to write himself into the record books. He aims to smash that benchmark by six years against current world champion Barrios.
Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) will return from a four-year hiatus for what looks to be a swansong fight in boxing’s capital after dealing with the disappointment of losing another political battle.
Reflecting on his defeat after a failed Presidential bid, Pacquiao thanks his loyal supporters.
“From my heart, thank you very much,” said the ‘Pac-Man.’ “Though I did not succeed in my run for the Senate, I am deeply grateful for every vote, prayer, and support.
“My heart will remain with the nation. And my dream for a nation that uplifts every Filipino family will never change.
“I also sincerely congratulate all the winners. May your service to our nation be honest, humane, and meaningful.
“To everyone who voted and believed in me, thank you for your love. To those who did not choose me, thank you still, for you are also part of the process that strengthens our democracy.
“The fight continues. The service goes on. For God. For the nation. For every Filipino,” he concluded.
Pacquiao’s comeback will occur in the same year he’s inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, an unusual event for any boxer.
If successful against Barrios at the Las Vegas venue, Pacquiao hopes to defend the title in Manila during the Ali vs. Frazier III 50th anniversary weekend.
