Golden Boy Promotions have announced the dates for two of boxing’s most anticipated bouts. According to a news article on Setanta Sports, heavyweight David Haye, who is now ranked at number 5 by the WBC, will face a top-ten contender on November the 29th. And then, on December the 6th, Oscar De La Hoya will box for the very last time. Haye’s fight will take place at The 02 Arena in London, and De La Hoya’s final fight will take place in Las Vegas..
According to Setanta, there is a strong chance Haye will fight the winner of the July match-up between James Tony and Hasim Rahman. This would be a good fight for “The Hayemaker” as he makes his heavyweight re-debut. Neither Toney or Rahman are overly dangerous due to their age and where they are at this stage in their careers, but both are big names and can still talk a great fight. In other words, The O2 Arena would very likely be sold out should Haye face either guy.
As for De La Hoya, according to Setanta, his farewell fight will come against none other than Miguel Cotto – if Cotto gets past Antonio Margarito in July. This would be some way for Oscar to go out – win or lose. Setanta do not share with us the details that lead them to believe De La Hoya will box Cotto, but they say Oscar seems “increasingly likely” to face the Puerto Rican star. Should this indeed be the case, Oscar would be putting the final touches to a great career in a very golden way indeed. Again, win or lose, De La Hoya would deserve immense credit for taking such a tough one for his very last fight.
It seems Golden Boy Promotions are very much one of the best teams out there at putting on titanic fights when they are in the mood to do so – a De La hoya-Miguel Cotto showdown being about as big a fight as their is today. Proving they can get the big names together due to their power and influence, Golden Boy are huge players in the world of boxing right now.
Let’s hope both proposed fights do come off. Haye’s projected fight would be a great way to begin a new chapter in his boxing career. While De La Hoya’s proposed bout would be a sensational way for Oscar to write the final chapter on his great career.
