Boxing star, 23, dies after suffering brain injury on undercard of Naoya Inoue fight

Japanese boxer Kazuki Anaguchi, 23, has tragically passed away after suffering a brain injury.

Anaguchi was on the undercard of Naoya Inoue’s undisputed super-bantamweight clash with Marlon Tapales on Boxing Day – where he squared off with Seiya Tsutsumi. The 23-year-old was knocked down four times during the bout, but managed to make it to the final bell.

Tsutsumi was declared the winner via unanimous decision, while Anaguchi needed help from his team in the ring to stand up. There were immediate concerns for Anaguchi’s health, and he was transported a local hospital where he slipped into a coma in the ambulance.

Anaguchi underwent emergency surgery, but he was unable to recover from his injuries – dying on Friday. The news was made public by the Japanese Boxing Commission.

“Top Rank joins the boxing community in mourning the passing of Kazuki Anaguchi,” Inoue’s American promoter told ESPN. “We send our sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

“Rest in peace. Remember that being a great fight, just not one he should have ever had to give his life for,” one fan responded. While a second said: “Best fight of the year last year! RIP Warrior! Your name lives forever…”

“One of the best fights I’ve ever seen with such a tragic ending. Hate to see it may God have you in heaven champ,” a third replied.

And another added: “Boxing is not a sport to play with, it’s the most dangerous of all combat sports and sadly has the highest death rates. Respect all fighters that steps inside the ring. Rest In Power!”
