Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, feels that a fight between Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao would be one for the ages. During a recent interview with Ring Magazine, Pacquiao said that he was interested in fighting Hatton after the June 28 showdown with WBC lightweight champion David Diaz.
“After Diaz, I want to fight Ricky Hatton. That will be a good fight. I’m 150lbs right now. My sparring partners are always 140 to 150lbs. It’s not a problem for me,” Pacquiao said. “And I’m not getting any younger. So why not?”
The fight is probably not going to happen in 2008. Hatton is scheduled to face IBF junior welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi in the fall. Hatton turned down a potential fight with Oscar De La Hoya to move forward with Malignaggi.
Schaefer says a potential Hatton-Pacquiao clash would attract interest from all over the world.
“It would be a great fight, the styles of the two fighters could make it special. There would be interest around the world because both fighters have a huge following,” Schaefer told The Telegraph.
