There are not too many fights out there today that make perfect sense.
Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito is one of them and the other that’s seemingly in the works is Nate “The Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell vs. Juan Manuel Marquez.
Campbell is currently coming off of a huge upset victory over Juan “The Baby Bull” Diaz which took place earlier this year in Can Cun, Mexico. Campbell showed his full potential in defeating the aggressive-natured Texican utilizing his counter-punching skill and toughness in the process. With the Casamayor-Diaz bout apparently coming to fruition, it left the lightweight champion in Campbell no one to dance with this summer.
It’s been well noted that Juan Manuel Marquez desires a trilogy bout with Filipino icon, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. That’s no secret and if it is to you… you’re probably living in a gopher hole somewhere in the mountains.
Marquez is willing to chase the “Pacman” all the way up to 135 pounds but with Pacquiao facing off against David Diaz in late June, it leaves Marquez idle time to either rot on the shelf or make a trilogy bout inevitable by grabbing some notoriety within the lightweight division.
Should a Marquez-Campbell bout somehow end up taking place, it’d be a perfect fight for both men being that the winner would surely align themselves for a shot at Manny sometime in the Fall.
In speaking with Golden Boy Promotions’ match-maker extraordinare, Eric Gomez, he stated, “It’s very likely that the bout will happen… as long as Don (King) is reasonable with the terms, it’s a great fight to make.”
Hopefully all parties can come to an agreement as it’s a fight that boxing needs in a major way.
