WBC lightweight champion David Diaz told the Manila Bulletin that he is not paying attention to the fact that Manny Pacquiao has not begun his training camp for their June 28 showdown in Las Vegas. Diaz began his training camp around April18/19. Pacquiao is expected to start his camp shortly in Wakee Salud?s Gym in Cebu and then head over to Los Angeles to hook up with his trainer Freddie Roach on May 10. Pacquiao was expected to come into Los Angeles this week to begin training, but postponed his travel plans and made Roach and promoter Bob Arum concerned.
“That?s not my concern. I don?t worry about that and my focus is in getting myself ready for the fight,” Diaz said. “I don?t care if he goes parachuting or something. I will just train as hard as I can so there?ll be no excuses on my part (should I lose).”
Diaz will be Pacquiao first bout at 135-pounds and Roach wants to him to be fully prepared for what is expected to be a tough fight. He knows that he’s the naturally bigger man, but Diaz is already keeping himself near the proper weight distance.
“I didn?t allow myself to get bigger so right now I am just 143 to about 147-pounds,” Diaz said.
A press conference to officially announce their fight is scheduled for May 13 in Los Angeles.
