Jerwin, Eumir eye October fights

Boxing buddies Jerwin Ancajas and Eumir Marcial might find themselves fighting on the same night in October in the United States.

Ex-world champion Ancajas is going to exercise a rematch clause with Argentine Fernando “Puma” Martinez, who surprisingly took away the International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-bantamweight crown last February.

Sean Gibbons, whose MP Promotions represents Ancajas, has mentioned the working date: 1 October.

The loss to Martinez came as a shocker to everyone in the fight game.

Relatively inexperienced, Martinez outworked the seasoned Ancajas, who was making the tenth defend of the title he had won in September 2016.

Not only is Ancajas attempting to regain the IBF 115-lb title, Marcial is being targeted to display his wares when he makes his third professional bout, according to Gibbons.

“That would be great,” Gibbons said from the US. “Very good chance (that’s going to happen).”

Marcial also fights under the Manny Pacquiao-owned outfit that Gibbons, a former pro, has been running.

The last time Marcial fought as a pro, he had to pick himself up thrice from the floor before stopping the rangy puncher Isiah Hart last April.

Currently, the Philippines is without a world champion after Ancajas and three others lost theirs in the last six months.

Another champion, John Riel Casimero, was stripped for violating strict protocols.
