Bernabe Concepci?n may not be as skilled as Manny Pacquiao at this point in his career, being 20 years old, but something about the Filipino boxing export reminds me of Pacman and it is not the fact that Freddie Roach is his trainer. When Pacquiao hit the world stage, he had a guajiro aurora to him. Several years later, Manny is a man of the world having made millions in the fight game and the wide-eyed country kid may not be totally gone but it is no longer one of his central charms.
As for Concepci?n (bad hair cut having – just like Manny), he looks like the young country kid who has been let loose in the worldly city. He is awkward in the manner which he carries himself, over excited and too happy to be in the ring. No worries, because in terms of fighting, the Filipino from Rizal may be country, but he has enough raw ability for Roach to polish.
Saturday night in Queretaro, Mexico, Bernabe finished off Torrence Daniels with a lethal right hand which his American opponent never saw coming.
*** While it might not have been ?The World Is Watching,? but Roach can mark a victory over fellow trainer Roger Mayweather who was working Daniel’s corner. Nearly a year ago, Mayweather guided his nephew ? pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. – to a split decision victory over a Roach guided Oscar De La Hoya.
