WBC bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. will have to use a boxing basic to improve his chances of beating unified IBF-WBA bantam king Naoya Inoue, according to an analyst.
Although Donaire was the only fighter who came close to beating the undefeated Inoue in 2019, the Filipino Flash remains the underdog heading to their rematch on June 7.
This is why boxing analyst Atty. Ed Tolentino said Donaire will have to use the jab, which is described as the most important punch in the sport.
“I’d like to see Donaire throw more jabs. Kasi nung unang laban parang hinihintay lang niyang pumasok si Inoue,” said Tolentino.
“Alam natin Inoue likes to come in, put on the pressure. So you’d like to see the jab to keep Inoue at safe distance, at bay ika nga, then set up his power punches.”
Tolentino said the heavy-handed Japanese is known for his crippling body punches, which is why Donaire will have to throw his shots from a certain range.
