You know that old soul song with the catchy lead. I think it?s The Four Tops.
?What becomes of the broken-hearted???As I walk this land with broken dreams I have visions of many things Love’s happiness is just an illusion Filled with sadness and confusion, What becomes of the broken hearted Who had love that’s now departed? I know I’ve got to find Some kind of peace of mind Maybe.
Frankly, promoter Bob Arum does not know and does not care since he is happily married. Third time was the charm for Uncle Bob as he clicked with Lovee duBoef.
So Arum is neither loveworn or lovetorn but he does have some fatherly advice for Juan Manuel Marquez.
You could?ve knocked the Bobinator over with a soggy knish when he discovered that the Mexican fighter was in the Philippines and was nagging Manny Pacquiao for a third bout.
?I didn?t know about it,? Arum said, ?until I saw it on Boxingconfidential.?
I asked Arum if the scene wasn?t just a bit of harmless hype that might stoke fires for a third fight between the two majestic warriors.
Balderdash, Uncle Bob said.
?It borders a little on the pathetic,? Arum said. ?Marquez does not help himself or his cause by doing that. He?s giving people the idea that the only person in the world he can fight is Manny and that?s just not true.
?They (promoter Golden Boy) made Marquez look pathetic. Does anyone think that?s going to provoke me, Manny or the public to demand an immediate third bout? What it shows is desperation.
?It?s like when a couple breaks up and one person is begging to get the other one to come back. What a person in that situation should do is say, bleep you, I don?t need you and just play hard to get. Marquez should be looking to and talking about fighting Edwin Valero, Joan Guzman, lots of guys beyond Manny.?
Arum said he wasn?t being critical of Golden Boy.
?If they want to spend their money like that, okay then. I wouldn?t do it and I know Manny wouldn?t do it if the situation was reversed. It?s not just my style and I don?t think Manny would ever plead like that, especially in public. But I certainly don?t fault Golden Boy for doing it. I guess they thought it was right and necessary.?
Arum reconfirmed that Pacman will face WBC lightweight champ David Diaz June 28 and then sneak in more fate as 2008 draws to a close.
?I thought Manny handled himself extremely well,? Arum said. ?He showed a little humility and he showed class. He was a real gentleman and the people love that about him.?
Bob Arum, mender of broken hearts. Those of you who have had bad luck romatically can dial this Love Doctor at 1-800-Lovesick 24 hours a day.
Best part is, Love Doctor Bob told me, that the phone call is free.
