Joe Souza thought he had seen everything in boxing. But nothing would prepare him for that day six years ago at San Fernando Gym. When Oscar De La Hoya, in town to fight David Kamau at the Alamodome, showed up for a workout.
And Oscarmania broke out.
“It was chaos, total chaos,” recalled Souza, the gym’s boxing coordinator. “I got there at 8 o’clock in the morning. People were already waiting. They’d been there since 6.
“Oscar didn’t get there until that afternoon. By then there were hundreds of people. We had kids crawling through the windows, women standing on tables. It was amazing.”
