He was a no frills solid man, who brought a lunch pail filled with power, guts, pride, will, talent and character. And he fought everyone, anytime, anywhere. And he was great. He was Marvin Hagler. He was real, he was reliable, he was what you want in a friend. What we want today in people. Politicians, leaders, whatever it happens to be. People that you can trust. He was reliable. You knew what he was going to bring into that ring; everything! Everything! You could rely on him. Today in the days of neon talents and flash, this guy was no frills. He was dependable, he was reliable, he was solid, he was as good as it gets. He didn’t come up with a sliver spoon, he had no spoon. He had those wooden things they gave you in the good humor truck years ago to break into the ice cream. And, he knew that too. This is guy who got into an argument with his managers. He was very loyal to them. On the way up he wanted to fight all the best fighters in Philly. The promoter said, ‘why does he keep coming here? Why does he come to their hometown and take on the best middleweights in the world in their hometown?’ His manager said, because he insists on it, he wants to fight the best, he wants to test himself. He wants to forge himself in fire and to know there is nothing but steel. That’s what he was, he was steel. He was Superman. Punches bounced off of him like bullets bounced off of Superman. And, I know, I am getting a bit dramatic here, obviously, but he deserves it. That’s how special he was, he made himself that kind of man. It wasn’t flash, it wasn’t all that other stuff, he didn’t have a gold medal from the Olympics, he didn’t have a big promoter giving money at the beginning. But, he had the desire, the dream, the will to be the best. And he was great. One of the greatest middleweights of all time and one of the greatest southpaws of all time. Who fights John “The Beast” Mugabi when you don’t have to? Undefeated with all knockouts. This guy who could knock down all four walls. Who fights him? Marvin Hagler fights him.
