Pinoy judge gets prime assignment

Filipino boxing judge Rey Danseco got a high-profile and juicy assignment from the World Boxing Council (WBC).

Danseco, based in San Francisco the last few years, will be one of the three judges for the interim WBC lightweight title fight starring the immensely-popular Ryan Garcia and Luke Campbell on 2 January at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas.

It will be the 40th world title fight for the Quezon province-born Danseco, who has also officiated in the United Kingdom, Scotland, Mexico, Australia, Japan, Thailand, China and Canada apart from his many assignments in the Philippines.

The Garcia-Campbell clash will be the 47-year-old Danseco’s first tour of duty since the world was locked down owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Garcia, 22, is a fast-rising American puncher of Mexican lineage.

Nicknamed “Kingry,” Garcia sports a 20-0 record with 17 knockouts.

One of his top KO victims was Filipino puncher Romero Duno.

In their highly-anticipated match in November last year, Garcia needed less than one round to get rid of Duno, who came into the fight with a fearsome reputation.
