In a bout where the will was still there but the conditioning wasn’t, Iron Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. fought to a draw on Saturday night in Los Angeles. Except it was never a draw.
As announcer Mauro Ranallo said in the final round: “It’s not a battle of the ages, but a battle of the aged.” Tyson is 54 years old and Jones is 51, but the older man clearly dominated the fight.
The judges were three boxing Hall of Famers in Christy Martin, Vinny Pazienza and Chad Dawson, but what in the world were they watching??
Tyson showed more power and speed than his younger, lighter, and taller opponent. Even at his advanced age, you could still see flashes of the fighter that was once the most feared human on the planet. He still had hand speed and technical ability that was too much for Jones, and appeared to be in much better condition.
Whether this means we’ll see either of these two back in the ring, both of them said after the fight . But if you’re curious, even at age 54, Mike Tyson can still totally beat you up.
