SuperSport again brings subscribers top-class boxing this weekend with a live broadcast of the WBC super featherweight championship bout between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez early on Sunday morning. The pair fought in May, 2004, with Pacquiao knocking down his opponent three times in the opening round. Marquez fought back and totally dominated the later rounds of the fight, leading to many observers believing he had done enough to win, but it was declared a controversial draw.
The broadcast of Sunday?s tournament at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas begins at 03:00 on SuperSport 1 and will also feature some of the fights on the undercard. The bill includes Steven Luevano v Tersak Jandaeng, David Diaz v Ramon Montano and Abner Mares v Diosdao Gabi.
Many feel that, at the age of 34, Marques is past his best. But he boasts a record of 48 victories, just three defeats and one draw in his distinguished career. Pacquiao, who is 28, has recorded 45 victories, with three defeats and two draws. The fact that they have both knocked out 35 of their opponents makes their records even more similar and if the stats are anything to go by, it should be a cracker of a fight.
