Magsayo eyes to fight anew in January

Filipino featherweight contender Mark Magsayo expects another ring action by early next year.

Magsayo told the Manila Times on Thursday that he will stay in Los Angeles, California to continue his training for his next fight tentatively on January 2021.

“I have an upcoming fight in January but there is no date yet,” Magsayo said in Cebuano.

Magsayo won via split decision against Rigoberto Hermosillo last Sunday (Manila Time) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. It was his debut under the banner of Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions. The 25-year-old boxer is one of the rising stars of the MP stable with a perfect record of 21 wins with 14 knockouts.

MP Promotions has four world champions under its wings in Pacquiao (WBA, welterweight), Jerwin Ancajas (IBF, super-flyweight), Johnriel Casimero (WBO, bantamweight) and Pedro Taduran (IBF, mini-flyweight).

The Tagbilaran City, Bohol pride Magsayo yearns to become the stable’s fifth champion.

“I was satisfied with my last fight against Hermosillo, I think I did what I want to do. There are rooms for improvement and we’re going to apply the needed adjustments in our next training camp,” said Magsayo.

Magsayo flew to the United States at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in July to train with Hall-of-Fame boxing coach Freddie Roach at the Wildcard Gym.

Magsayo went down the wire against the Mexican slugger Hermosillo, a late replacement for Jose Haro, who backed out of the fight a few days prior to the event. The bout was the main-event of the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) show last Sunday

“I was told by Sir Sean Gibbons (MP Promotions president) that PBC liked me and we’re staying in Los Angeles to continue training and wait for the fight in January,” said Magsayo.

Magsayo did not see any ring action for more than a year prior to his fight last week.
