Boxscore: NAIROBI, Kenya – September 13, 2020 – The much awaited World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight bout featuring the reigning champion Yamileth Mercado of Mexico and the title challenger Catherine Phiri of Zambia, still will not happen anytime soon due to the rising cases of Covid-19 in the North American country.
The fight between the two female boxers would have happened back in March 21 but because of the pandemic, WBC was forced to postpone it to April 4 but still it did not happen because of the ever rising Covid-19 cases in Mexico where the fight is to be staged.
Phiri’s camp is still hopeful that the Zambian top female boxers will soon get her chance to challenge for the title and win it back to Africa.
The former title holder from Zambia, has been up in the ring challenging for the title unsuccessfully since 2017 when she lost it to Kenya’s Fatima Zarika.
It has been a tough road for Phiri in her quest to reclaim back her title but she is a tough lady too and that is why Boxing fans across Africa are still hopeful that finally the fight will take place and Phiri will make them proud by bringing the title back to the continent.
Mercado will be making her first title defense since she defeated Kenya’s Fatuma Zarika back in November of 2019 in her title challenge rematch in her home soil in Mexico.
Mercado’s camp, led by her coach Alfredo Caballero has said that their boxer is in good shape and ready for her first title defense.
The Covid-19 cases in Mexico is still surging and therefore making the fight even more uncertain.
Now Phiri’s hope’s are pinned on the Mexicans to make a good fight against Covid-19 so that her WBC bantamweight challenge against Mercado shall come to pass sooner than later.
