Rabobank Theater, Bakersfield – In a crossroads battle at super middleweight, Alfredo Angulo (26-7, 21 KOs) picked up one of his biggest wins in years with a ten round split decision victory over former world champion Peter Quillin (34-2-1, 23 KOs). The scores were 96-94 for Quillin, 97-93 for Angulo and 96-94 for Angulo.
This was only Angulo’s third fight since 2016, and it was Quillin’s fourth fight since 2015.
This is Quillin’s fourth bout at 168-pounds, and Angulo has been fighting above 160 for his last seven fights, since 2014.
Angulo looked very slow at the start of the fight. Quillin was using a lot of movement and picking his shots – and connecting with much faster hands. Angulo did better in the second with his pressure and punching to the body, but Quillin was much busier, boxing better and using the ring better.
They went to war in the third, toe to toe action and Angulo was outworking and outlanding Quillin with the better shots. Quillin went back to his movement in the fourth, using the ring to jab and set up other shots. But eventually Angulo trapped him and rocked him bad with a huge hook. Angulo would jump on Quillin, who did his best to fight him off.
Angulo really worked over the body in the fifth, banging away on Quillin for more of the round. Quillin was doing well in the sixth – until he was rocked by a big hook and then Angulo jumped on him with big punches and really working him over. Quillin stayed on his feet and was trading back. It was basically a mirror image in the seventh, when Angulo rocked Quillin with a big left hook in the final minute.
Quillin again found himself in trouble during the eighth after boxing well for the first two minutes. During the ninth, Quillin found himself in trouble several times as Angulo seemed to buzz him with just about everything he landed. The tenth and final round saw Quillin take heavy punches but he may have squeaked out the point with several heavy blows that connected.
