The only sound coming from the tiny gym on the near North Side was the familiar pop, pop, BAM of the mitts. All other activity had stopped. Everyone else in the gym left his spot and hovered around the ring like seagulls, straining to get a look.
Philippine boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao was in town, working out in San Antonio for the first time Tuesday in preparation for Saturday’s showdown at the Alamodome against Marco Antonio Barrera.
“This is the biggest fight of his career,” said Roberto Nazario, one of Pacquiao’s business managers. “He wants to prove he can take on the big guys.”
Nazario knows that should Pacquiao beat Barrera, the fighter considered by many as the best featherweight in the world, the rest of America will want to gawk, too.
