Madison Square Garden, New York City – Terence Crawford (35-0, 26 KOs) stopped Amir Khan (33-5, 20 KOs) in the sixth round to retain the WBO welterweight title, after a very odd ending.
Khan was doing well early in the first round, landing quick shots as Crawford was taking his time and starting slow. But then out of nowhere Crawford landed a two punch combination that sent Khan down. And then in the closing seconds a big right hand stunned Khan.
Crawford came out feinting with the jab in the second, looking to set Khan up for bigger shots. Khan was staying back and looking for counters. Khan was picking his shots slowly, but was still being outfought and pressured.
Khan came out with a combination to start the third. Crawford was jabbing and looking to set Khan up for bigger shots. The more crisper shots were connecting for Crawford.
More strong jabs from Crawford in the fourth. Khan was landing a quick shot here and there, but getting outlanded. A combination of shots seemed to stun Khan when they were trading punches. Crawford began to dig to the body and had Khan in some trouble.
Crawford was landing heavy combinations. Khan was trying to block them as best he could and fire back. Khan was taking some big shots, landing a few quick punches in the closing seconds, but not doing much damage on Crawford.
During the sixth round, Crawford landed a very hard low blow. Khan was in pain and limping in the corner, and then it appeared the contest was stopped out of nowhere by Khan’s trainer Virgil Hunter.
