DONAIRE READY FOR JAPAN INVASION

WORLD flyweight champion Nonito Donaire, Jr. is more than willing to invade his enemy?s territory if only to fulfill his most cherished goal.

In an interview with the daily morning radio program ?Sports Chat? Thursday morning, Donaire expressed his readiness to fight in Japan if that?s what it takes to win the remaining prestigious belts of his division.

Donaire is still eyeing a bout with anyone between two Japanese world champions, Daisuke Naito and Takefumi Sakata.

Naito holds the World Boxing Council (WBC) belt while Sakata owns the World Boxing Association (WBA) 112-lb crown.

Donaire is one of four current Filipino world champions that include minimumweights Donnie Nietes and Florante Condes and bantamweight Gerry Penalosa.

Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao holds a fringe title of his division, the WBC International super featherweight belt. He will however get his chance at a regular belt when the General Santos City fighter battles WBC superfeatherweight ruler Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico on March 15, 2008 in Las Vegas.

No Filipino fighter has held two world crowns from two different organizations at the same time, much more hold the undisputed title. Donaire currently keeps the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and International Boxing Organization (IBO) crowns although the IBO strap is not widely accepted belt.

Pacquiao came close to holding two belts but his fight with then IBF and WBA featherweight champion Marquez last May 2004 ended in a draw.

Former world flyweight champion Erbito Salavarria, now a successful trainer based in Quezon City, once held WBA flyweight crown in 1975. Previous to that, he held the WBC crown for three years since he won it from Thai legend Chartchai Chionoi in 1970.

Donaire?s 5th round TKO win over Australia-based Armenian Vic Darchinyan for the world flyweight championship was recently honored by boxing TV network HBO and the widely-read Ring Magazine as ?Knockout of the Year? and ?Upset of the Year?.
