Floyd Mayweather again proved to the world that he is the planet’s premier pugilist after brilliantly dismantling Ricky Hatton at the MGM in Las Vegas.
There were plenty in the trade (myself included) who felt that Hatton had the tools to topple Mayweather but the WBC welterweight boss boxed beautifully.
He coped with the predictable early Hatton onslaught before taking command of ring centre and sickening his opponent with a steady stream of fast, accurate shots.
As Hatton lost his cool and went head-hunting Mayweather retained his poise and dissected his English opponent with ruthless efficiency before closing the show in spectacular fashion in round 10.
It was arguably Mayweather’s best performance since he crushed Arturo Gatti more than two years ago and his display proved that he is still at the very top of his game at 30.
We all knew about Floyd’s speed and defensive genius before the fight but plenty were surprised at just how good he is fighting on the inside.
Hatton repeatedly cut off the ring and got to Floyd but the American was never rattled and showed some brilliant moves of his own inside to nullify The Hitman’s attacks and set up his own.
Basically Mayweather can do it all.
Box, fight, slug, dance and whatever his future holds (he again spoke about retiring from the sport after the fight) history will remember him as one of the all-time great fighters.
