If we thought the clock was ticking on the first Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight that took place on May 2, 2015, probably five years later than it should have, then we’re certainly on borrowed time in 2019 if we’re going to see a rematch.
If Floyd Mayweather was waiting to see the pay-per-view numbers that were generated for the Pacquiao vs. Broner fight, the estimated 400,000 buys should be enough encouragement to lure Mayweather out of “retirement”, wink wink.
According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, “With around 400,000 units sold, that means Pacquiao-Broner grossed approximately $30 million in domestic pay-per-view revenue. The official gate for the announced crowd of 13,025 has not been made official yet by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, but it will be in the seven figures.”
A very passive Mayweather was present on January 19 when Pacquiao defeated Broner and opted not to enter the ring during the post-fight interview when Jim Gray invited Mayweather to weigh-in on the fight and potential future rematch with Pacquiao. I was in the venue and was bracing myself for a WWE moment when Mayweather was going to jump in the ring and proclaim the rematch is on while the crowd goes crazy and the internet breaks. Well, that moment never happened, leaving us to wonder what the future still holds.
