LOS ANGELES-Bobby Pacquiao scored an impressive unanimous decision victory over tough Oscar Villa even as another Filipino Nonito Donaire Jr. completed a sweep of Mexican opponents last night at the Quiet Cannon Montebello Country Club in Montebello here.
Pacquiao scored a fifth round knockdown with a mean body shot but failed to finish his game opponent after eight one-sided rounds.
“I am happy with the win and I hope to fight side by side with my brother next year here,” said the 27-year-old Pacquiao in his native tongue, referring to his dream of fighting in the big-time undercard of Manny in the US, the universally recognized king of featherweights.
As a consolation, Pacquiao came out unscathed and said he would be ready for a fight next month in Manila, also in the main supporting bout of the Manny Pacquiao-Fahsang 3K-Battery showdown.
Villa, a journeyman who still has only three wins to show in 25 fights, ended up with a bloodied nose as Pacquiao rained jabs and straights all night, to frustrate a highly partisan Latino crowd.
“This victory is for my country, my family and the Filipino people,” said Pacquiao, the Philippine featherweight champion who improved to 21-10-3.
Donaire, a resident of Northern California who traces his roots in General Santos City like Pacquiao, also found Gilberto Bola?os a tough hombre, also settling for a unanimous decision win after eight rounds.
Donaire flashed speed and accuracy, dropped his opponent twice in the second round, but failed to score a knockout.
He improved to 9-1 and hoped to land a big money fight soon.
It was sort of a homecoming for the General Santos boxers as Buboy Fernandez, trainer of the Pacquiao brothers, also met with Imelda Donaire, the mother of Nonito, his former school teacher.
