Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao should better stay at the super-featherweight division.
This was the advice on Sunday of boxing insiders on the heels of Floyd Mayweather Jr.?s dismantling of Ricky Hatton in their welterweight showdown Sunday at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
“This should be a lesson for Pacquiao to stay in his weight division,” suggests Cebu City Councilor Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem, who chairs the city’s sports committee as a reaction to Sunday?s showdown.
Mayweather solidified his pound-for-pound billing with a tenth-round stoppage of the previously unbeaten Hatton, a natural junior welterweight who was outclassed by the other-worldly Mayweather.
“Most people say Mayweather is a boring fighter, but Mayweather knows when to be dull and when to let it all hang out, because he knows its all a game of survival and not taking unnecessary chances when you’ve gone so far undefeated,” observed Jakosalem.
Pacquiao is set to challenge WBC super-featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez on March 15 in Las Vegas, but is also entertaining thoughts of moving up in weight to challenge some of the lightweight champions.
Some of the lightweight champions being groomed as Pacquiao’s future foes include WBC champion David Diaz and super champion Juan Diaz, a non-stop pressure fighter who has also shown interest in a fight with Pacquiao. /Correspondent Salven Lagumbay
