Undefeated unified IBF, IBO and WBA super welterweight champion Jarrett Hurd retained his titles when he knocked out British challenger Jason Welborn in the 4th round at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on the undercard of the Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury WBC world heavyweight championship.
Welborn (24-7-0, 7KOs) brought the fight to Hurd (23-0-0, 16KOs) from the outset and looked good when he trapped Hurd to the ropes taking two of the first three round as Hurd appeared to fail to use his advantage in size, height and reach. At the start of the 4th round, Welborn mounted a sustained attacked on Hurd whose back was on the ropes and appeared to be hurt. Hurd, who was wearing the yellow and purple colors of the Los Angeles Lakers whose home is the Staples Center, came out of the ropes and mounted his own attack on Welborn with combinations and finally a left to the body crupled Welborn to the ropes unable to beat Referee Lou Morrett's count.
