THE SGG Sports Promotions will open a wider door for aspiring Filipino fighters who will seek big money and fame in prizefighting.
Sammy Gello-ani, who is now on his own after resigning from the ALA Group of Companies last Nov. 10, becomes the newest player who will try to bring more glory to the country in boxing.
?I am on my own now. But I looked at this as progressive since I was in boxing for more than 30 years now. I am announcing that SGG has partnered with the Golden Boy Promotions, will continue and will become bigger since Golden Boy is coming to Asia,? Gello-ani said during a press conference held at the Cebu Grand Hotel Pool Side yesterday.
?Any promotions of Golden Boy in the Philippines will be partnered with the SGG Sports Promotions.?
Aside from the influential Golden Boy Promotions, which is owned by Oscar Dela Hoya, Gello-ani is now affiliated with the World Boxing Organization?an organization that awarded him as the promoter of the year.
The SGG-GBP partnership will be bringing to the Philippines the mandatory title defense of Gerry Pe?alosa in February.
?The negotiations are still going on but the WBO has sent demand letters to the managers. Underneath it is Oscar Larios who is more comfortable fighting in the Philippines than in any place else,? said Gello-ani.
One of the projects that the SGG and GBP are putting up for the first part of 2008 is the World Cup Boxing, which is tentatively scheduled by the end of May or early June.
?For sure, the challenger will be from the Latin American country. January is a crucial month because we will know who to line up in the World Cup, because if the country has no world champion then automatically they will be disqualified,? Gell-ani explained.
But his split from the fabled ALA Gym may bring Filipino fighters to greater heights.
?There will be a regular activity for topnotch boxers, a chance to fight in big cards. We can link to the world and we will be creating a new market for boxing to the world,? he stressed.
