Reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas will be defending his title against Mexican challenger Alejandro Santiago Barrios on September 29 at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California.
It was international matchmaker Sean Gibbons who confirmed to The Manila Times the fight between the 26-year-old Ancajas and the IBF No. 14 ranked Barrios.
?The reason we chose this opponent for Jerwin is we love a good aggressive Mexican style,? Gibbons said. ?We feel Santiago will come to rumble like all great Mexican warriors and the best matchup is Filipino versus Mexican.?
?Santiago is a great opponent to test Jerwin. I want a tough guy and that Mexican badass is coming for that strap,? added Gibbons.
Barrios, 22, holds a 16-2-4 win-loss-draw record with seven knockouts. He is coming off a split draw against Puerto Rican Jose Martinez in March.
Ancajas, on the other hand, holds a 30-1-1 win-loss-draw record with 20 knockouts.
He has successfully defended his title for the fifth time via unanimous decision win over compatriot Jonas Sultan last May 26, in Fresno, California.
