FRESNO, Calif.?Reigning titlist Jerwin Ancajas did not only outwork Jonas Sultan, he outhit the challenger as well.
Based on figures collected by CompuBox, a computerized system that scores punches and widely used in the sport, Ancajas wasn?t really off target Saturday night.
He was firing from different angles and was hitting better than Sultan throughout their lopsided bout for Ancajas? International Boxing Federation world junior-bantamweight crown Saturday night.
Increasing his work rate in the last 2 rounds, Ancajas threw 773 total punches against only 555 for Sultan, who abandoned his jabs in favor of power shots that rarely connected.
Ancajas made 234 hits for a 30.3% conversion rate against 130 by Sultan for a 23.4% clip.
Comparing Ancajas? Saturday performance with his showing against Israel Gonzalez of Mexico in Corpus Christi, Texas, in February, numbers revealed that Ancajas didn?t really flunk against Sultan, as pointed out by Ancajas? trainer Joven Jimenez.
While Ancajas knocked out Gonzalez in the 10th round and was ahead on all scorecards at the time of stoppage, it was clear that the southpaw from Panabo City could have done better against the Mexican challenger.
Ancajas unloaded 477 punches and connected on 130 for a 27% clip, 3 percentage points lower than his output over the weekend.
The noticeable difference, however, is Ancajas bottled up Gonzalez to a low total output of 303, out of which Gonzalez only landed 48 for a 15.8% conversion rate.
