FRESNO, CALIFORNIA ? Jerwin Ancajas is set for a long, well deserved rest as Top Rank Promotions is looking at an October date for his next fight.
International match-maker Sean Gibbons said the 26-year-old Filipino world champion won?t be back in the ring until five months from now against a handpicked opponent.
Ancajas was dominant in a unanimous decision win against challenger Jonas Sultan to retain his International Boxing Federation (IBF) super-flyweight championship at the Save Mart Center here, marking the first time in 93 years two Filipinos fought for a major world title.
?For the moment, Bob (Arum) says we have a date in October, and we?re going to look at a few different options and let?s get back in there,? said Gibbons amid a festive mood inside the dressing room of the champion from Panabo City, Davao del Norte.
But Gibbons hinted a unification match against any of the three other world champions at 115-pounds will have to wait a little.
Ancajas had no choice but to fight Sultan since the latter was the No. 1 IBF contender and mandatory challenger.
?When you get stuck with a mandatory (fight), you got to take what you got to take,? said Gibbons. ?When you say, ?I like a chocolate cake,? but then they will give us a vanilla cake, and so I have no choice.?
