TOP American promoters Bob Arum of Top Rank and Oscar dela Hoya of the Golden Boy Promotions are currently working on the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez rematch.
In a press conference called for the Miguel Coto vs. Shane Mosley fight, the most awaited announcement for the card was mentioned.
?Richard Schaefer and Bob Arum are already talking about a rematch (between Pacquiao and Marquez),? de la Hoya said in a report posted at www.fightnews.com.
But it?s possible the fight would be without a belt.
Both promoters are currently weighing options if the fight would be at the 130-pound division, where Marquez holds the WBC belt or at the 135 division or in between.
No preference
?I?m not going to advocate one course of action or another. I have no preference at all,? Arum said.
Aside from Marquez, Pacquiao could also face WBC lightweight champion David Diaz or the winner of the Humberto Soto vs. Joan Guzman on Nov. 17.
However, Pacquiao?s celebrated trainer, Freddie Roach wants his prized ward to take a shot against the dangerous Juan Diaz, who owns the WBA, IBF and WBO lightweight titles.
According to Roach, the Juan Diaz fight will attract huge money and a lot of viewers.
But Marquez, on the other hand, is willing to move up to 135 pounds just to take another shot with Pacquiao.
Both fighters figured in a controversial draw in May 2004.
Meanwhile, WBC President Jose Sulaiman urged Pacquiao to fight for the belt.
Sulaiman, who is in Manila to preside the 45th Annual WBC Convention which will start today at the Manila Hotel, reiterated that winning a title would stamp Pacquiao?s greatness in boxing.
Don?t fight for money
?It is very wrong for a fighter to fight only for money. They should be given the freedom to do what they should do. Winning a championship will be their crowning glory,? Sulaiman said in a report posted at Philboxing.com.
?After 20 or 50 years when he retires, Pacquiao will not be known to have beaten the best pound-for-pound boxers in (Erik) Morales and (Marco Antonio) Barrera, but whether he had won a championship belt. He can fight (Juan Manuel) Marquez or any of the Diazes or I don?t care who, but the most important thing is he must wear a belt to earn his place in history,? he said.
Pacquiao is already booked to fight on March 15 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, but his promoters are still choosing who he will face among the various boxers who want a piece of him.
