Reigning IBF/IBO flyweight champion Nonito Donaire, Jr. said ALA Boxing Gym star Z ?The Dream? Gorres has all the skills and fighting style to defeat Vic ?The Raging Bull? Darchinyan in their IBF super flyweight elimination bout set for March 1 next year most likely in Las Vegas.
?I think Gorres will beat Darchinyan by decision. Darchinyan is a one-punch fighter, while Gorres can throw four punches at a time so he can win on points along the way,? said Donaire, Jr. in a simple get-together with some selected friends from Cebu sports media hosted by sportsman John Z. Pages the other night at Moon Caf?.
?If he (Gorres) doesn?t get tired, then victory is already in the bag,? added Donaire, Jr., who is now in the thick of torrid preparation for his first title defense against Mexican Luis Maldonado on December 1 (December 2 in RP) at the Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.
Donaire won the twin IBF and IBO 112-pound belt when he dealt Darchinyan his first career loss by fight round knockout last July 7 at the Harbour Yard Arena also in Connecticut.
If he gets past Maldonado, whom he plans to finish off as early as possible, Donaire said he plans to move up to lightweight divisions, but he will work his way to the top one at a time.
Concerning his upcoming defense, Donaire said he is about 70 percent ready for Maldonado. He said he has a very good training camp here in Cebu at the fabled ALA Gym of revered boxing patron Antonio ?Bidoy? L. Aldeguer.
?I have a very good training camp here,? said Donaire. ?The big difference on my training in Cebu compared to the United States is that I have more sparring partners here. I learn to know my limit and how to go beyond my limit,? he said.
Donaire, who is out to prove he?s not a ?flash in a pan? following his one-punch demolition of Darchinyan, is set to return to the United States on November 24.
Meanwhile, Darchinyan?s trainer Billy Hussein said his ward will be in the best shape of his career when he takes on Gorres in an IBF-ordered eliminator wherein the winner earns a mandatory shot at WBO super flyweight titlist Dimitri Kirilov of Russia.
?We have a lot of respect for Gorres. He?s a very good fighter and this will be a tough bout for Vic,? Hussien told the Australia-based website www.sportsnut.com.au.
?But Vic has learned a lot form his loss to Nonito Donaire and you will see the very best of Vic Darchinyan when he fights Gorres. He will be the same force he was in the higher divisions as he was as a flyweight,? Hussein added.
