AUSTRALIA’S newly crowned IBO super flyweight boxing world champion Vic Darchinyan is set to face another tough Filipino fighter in the next step of a campaign he hopes will bring him at least two more world titles.
Sydneysider Darchinyan was today informed by the IBF he had been chosen to take part in an eliminator for that organisation’s super flyweight world championship.
Sixth ranked Darchinyan will fight seventh rated Z Gorres in an eliminator, possibly in Connecticut on December 1.
Darchinyan said he had some hand bruising from his 12th round stoppage win over Filipino Frederico Catubay last Saturday but added he was happy to take the fight against Gorres, who has until the end of this week to agree to the match.
If he agrees to fight the Australian, it will be the fifth time in Darchinyan’s last seven bouts he will have fought a Filipino.
The winner of the eliminator would go on to challenge Russia’s IBF super flyweight world champion Dimitri Kirilov. Darchinyan said if he won the eliminator he could fight Kirilov next March or April.
A victory over the Russian would put Darchinyan on course for a potential unification battle with Mexico’s WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel.
If he also won that fight, Darchinyan would then seek revenge against Filipino Nonito Donaire, who earlier this year ripped away his IBF and IBO flyweight titles.
“In the next year, I can win two or three (more) world titles,” Darchinyan said. “Slowly my dream is happening. When I was the (flyweight world) champion, no-one wanted to fight me in a unification. Now, everyone wants to fight me.”
Gorres, 25, has an impressive record of 27 wins (15 KOs) and 2 losses, one of them to Montiel. “Gorres is a very tough fighter and very good, but I want everyone to see I am back and beat the best,” Darchinyan said.
He said he would resume training on Monday and expected to reach maximum fitness again in a couple of weeks.
