Marley’s Mailbag: Pacman Fever: Racoon Glaser Ripped; Kessler-Calzaghe Questions, More!

By now, you know our attitude at Boxingconfidential. The hell with the readers of our site. Nah, just joking around.

The customers here are always right and the customers are always writing. So today?s Michael Marley Massive Monday Mailbag is, indeed, a heavy load.

Does anyone not consider boxing a true worldwide sport? They need to check out this edition of the Marley Mailbag in which we have letters from the Philippines, from Denmark, from Germany, from England and from tropical paradise Costa Rica. Not to mention our usual American letters.

As usual, Manny Pacquiao and his followers who put the fanatical in fan are packing the mailman?s pouch but let?s Martin Mayfield in as our leadoff hitter.

All letters to the Maniacal Marley go to: [email protected]

Marley: How you doing my name is Martin Mayfield, I work for Game Sports Magazine, and JC is my boy. Any way I just read your coverage of Ross Greenberg’s comments to SI and not only are you not a suck up, I happen to appreciate your work and am a fan. What we need in the boxing community is more people acknowledging those who take a stand like Ross did! RECOGNIZE GAME!

Hey Double M: Nice initials. Agreed, that Ross The Boss stood tall like my man, Rick Ross does down at the Port Of Miami. And Greenburg is dead on in saying that the print media sucks wind in covering boxing. The day of the full-time boxing writer on major metropolitan dailies is long gone, it seems. Greenburg?s letter was well-written and I liked the overall tone. Boxing does not need to keep taking a back seat.

Now maybe the Boxing Writers Association will wake up as to how the Internet has almost totally usurped print media in covering boxing.

Marley: Why would a snake asked a ride on a turtle when in fact the snake can swin faster? your tale or story sucks and sucks and sucks! to remind you, the original story is about a scorpion asking a ride on a back of toad/frog to cross a river/lake or whatever. get out of Manny’s back!

Monette Batulayan

MB: I confess that, other than cats, I am no animal expert. I grew up in the grit and grime of Boston, home of your 2007 World Series Champions (shortly to be). I knew about the scorpions but why should I pick on scorpions. Maybe I had ?snake? in mind after a recent convo with Uncle Bob Arum. Bob much prefers to be known as ?The Sheik.?

Sir :I’m writing as the Contributing Editor (Sport) of Esquire Magazine in the UK. I’m in the process of putting together a feature on Prince Naseem Hamed and wondered whether I could pick your brains.

I’m trying to get a number for Manny Steward and/ or Oscar Suarez but am also hoping to get a five minute phoner with Wayne McCullough, Kevin Kelley, Tom “Boom Boom’ Johnson and, obviously, Barrera. Would you have numbers or mails for these guys or know how I could track them down.

Obviously, there would be a thank you and namecheck for the site at the bottom of the piece.Hope you can help and keep up the great work,

Best, Bill Borrows

Hey Bill: Give me a ring on 917 853 4484. Should be able to assist.

Hi Mike: I?m a true blue PacManian and I would like to thank you for all the positive write-ups that you do for the Philippines ?National Fist?. Well, being one of the most exciting fighter on the planet, Manny truly attracts attention and his personal in and out-ring exploits because that?s what he is in person ? a dynamo and charismatic character. His every action becomes a natural part of daily news here in RP (Republic of the Philippines). And I laud most boxing writer?s review in putting him on top of the heap of the P4P list today.

Anyway, going back to the subject of your most recent article, I would like to rename Juan ?the Baby Bull? Diaz into Juan ?the Raging Bull? Diaz as he looks like one on his most recent conquest of Julio ?the Kid? Diaz. The moniker would surely fit Juan as he has already outgrown his baby fats (his seemingly incongruent physique being the topic of most initial judgment about the man?s athleticism and ability to box) and he seems to snore and puff like a raging bull as he throws those seven to eight combinations in mowing down his surprised opponents. His work rate is amazing and would more or less be a match to Manny?s level of stamina and conditioning. Those punches may not be as lethal as the ones being hammered out by the PacMan but they have their distinctive sting when they land. Thus, I believe that it?s just appropriate to re-christen Juan Diaz as ?The Raging Bull? on his next fight as he matures into another exciting fighter just like Pacquiao.

Wishing you all the best on your columns from the Philippine Islands.

Your Filipino writing fanatic, ED Macraig

Marley: I read on one of your articles about DK getting a 400k site fee and I’m wondering if it was for the Diaz v. Diaz show. If it was (I’m guessing it wasn’t a casino) who would pay that sort of fee for that fight at that venue?

JUAN

Hey Juan: The Sears Centre, with no casino attached, was hungry for the exposure. That’s why King brought Juan and Julio to the hinterlands of Chicago. ‘Nuff said.

Sir: I really like your writing style. You can press the hot sauce out of the PACLANDERs.But I am one.May I ask if this match up could really happen? If it does,we can’t really know who will win.But my opinion is, with those punches hitting Julio, he shouldnt have lasted the 8th round?I am already imagining that when Juan fights the PAC, it would be another ALI and Foreman in their era.Anyway, I believe that a Pacquaio vs Diaz fight would be a hot seller. Pls help me describe a racoon. Its that a rat who talks nuts?

Dear Sir: Hot sauce is always good! Put some comeback sauce on it and you get the huge page views we?re enjoying at Boxingconfidentia now. We try to never commit the ultimate sin which is being boring. Pacman-Juan Diaz could be a major attraction a year from now, no doubt on that. You refer then to Rick Glaser as a nutty racoon.
