The man who masterminded Jeff Horn?s shock win over Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao still has a trick or two up his sleeve. Not just for Englishman Gary Corcoran, who will attempt to steal Horn?s WBO welterweight title in Brisbane next week, but also undefeated American Terence Crawford, a man many consider the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Crawford will be ringside for Horn?s first title defence at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday night, and provided the former Brisbane schoolteacher is successful, the pair will meet in America early next year.
Horn?s trainer Glenn Rushton has spent many an hour studying Crawford and believes there are weaknesses Horn can exploit. The cynic would suggest Rushton is making a mistake by looking beyond Corcoran.
Rushton demurs. He insists he has the utmost respect for the challenge that lies in wait on Wednesday night.
?This fight against Corcoran has been very different to Manny Pacquiao in terms of technical skills,? Rushton said.
?This is where guys think they know what Jeff Horn does. You don?t know what Jeff Horn is going to do, I can tell you now. They don?t know what Jeff Horn is going to do.
?I take each fighter and I look at it like a game of chess. If I was him, how would I fight Jeff? It is a continual move, countermove strategy.
?It is a completely different camp and it has revolved around a lot of skills different to the Manny Pacquiao fight. A lot of people won?t pick up the subtle differences but they are all very important.
?Manny was a lot more complex ? he is a very complex boxer Manny Pacquiao. He (Corcoran) is not as complex as Manny Pacquiao. Still, that doesn?t mean he is easier.
?The whole idea is I keep things as simple as possible therefore it is easier for Jeff to execute. I have drilled and programmed the seven-point plan into him session by session. He has it firmly in his brain now. I can assure this is going to be an exciting fight. It is going to be a great fight.?
