POSTFIGHT: The two men embrace and say some kind things to each other. Everybody’s happy. And you know what? Everybody should be. That was a fun fight to watch, and you could make the case that it was worth the $99.
After the fight, Mayweather told Showtime he owed the fans from the Pacquiao fight?he actually got a little emotional when he said that?and he wanted to give them a show. He also said McGregor was a tougher competitor then he thought. Asked about going 50-0 and the significance of that, Mayweather said, “Rocky Marciano is a legend. I look going into the Hall of Fame some day.” Mayweather also said, “for sure,” this was his last fight.
McGregor said Mayweather was not that fast or that powerful but that he was so composed. He also said referee Robert Byrd shouldn’t have stopped the fight, though he said he was tired. He said Byrd should have let him Mayweather finish the job and put him down.
McGregor said he’d return to the UFC, and he said he’s not sure if he’ll box again.
10th round: Mayweather traps him in the corner and lands a huge right. Then another and McGregor stumble backward. Then, Byrd stops it. It’s over. 10th round TKO. A few seconds later, McGregor says, “I’m dead.” Yeah, dude. No joke.
Ninth round: McGregor appeared to land a low blow, and Mayweather doubles over. Byrd has a little chat with McGregor. McGregor seems to have found a second wind. He’s throwing tons of punches. Then, Mayweather lands two big rights. McGregor is forced to hold on. Big combination for Mayweather, and it seems like the end is very near. Mayweather catches him in the corner. McGregor stumbles exhaustedly into the ropes. McGregor can barely stand up. Forbes scores it for Mayweather (10-8 because of his complete domination).
Overall: Mayweather 87-83
Eighth round: McGregor is still slipping some of Mayweather’s punches, and he lands a punch or two. Still, McGregor looks really tired. Big uppercut from Mayweather. Then a right hand. McGregor is making this round close, though his punches are pitty-pat. Forbes scores it for Mayweather.
Overall: Mayweather 77-75
Seventh round: When McGregor punches now, it looks like he’s got no power on them. Mayweather, meanwhile, has plenty of power. Mayweather lands four straight shots to McGregor’s chin. Mayweather catches McGregor trying to switch his stance and lands a big right. Forbes scores it for Mayweather.
Overall: Mayweather 67-66
Sixth round: McGregor has turned Mayweather complete around. And he’s just punching them from behind. And Byrd does nothing. Right hand to the body, and then he lands another right. And now Mayweather is getting warmed up, winging shots at Mayweather. It seems like it’s a matter of time. Mayweather smiles at McGregor, and McGregor smiles back. Hey, everybody is BFFs now! Except Mayweather has evened the fight. Forbes scores it for Mayweather.
Overall: 57-57
Fifth round: Mayweather still isn’t punching a ton, but I think he’s trying to tire McGregor by letting him wing shots and putting the pressure on McGregor. Mayweather is also going to the body quite a bit. Now, McGregor is trying to hold on. Mayweather lands a nice left with 30 seconds to go. McGregor is beginning to look exhausted. Forbes scores it for Mayweather.
Overall: McGregor 48-47
Fourth round: Look, I’ll admit this: McGregor is doing light years better than I ever thought was possible. I still think Mayweather will win, but man, I don’t know. McGregor continues to be the aggressor. He hits Mayweather low, and Mayweather didn’t appreciate it. The two exchange punches, and now, Mayweather is beginning to be more aggressive. He felt McGregor’s power, and I think it’s not bothering him. McGregor’s mouth is wide open too. He appears to be tiring. Either way, Mayweather is now backing him up. Forbes scores it for Mayweather.
Overall: McGregor 39-37
Third round: Mayweather goes to the corner and Byrd warns McGregor again to not him in the back of the head. He does it again and Byrd says nothing. Halfway through, and McGregor lands two jabs. Mayweather lands a couple of rights to the body. Mayweather is still pumping out that jab. McGregor is still switching every once in a while. Again, McGregor hits Mayweather with a rabbit punch. Forbes scores it for McGregor.
Overall: McGregor 30-27
Second round: Byrd warns McGregor for rabbit punching Mayweather. Mayweather then lands a left. McGregor keeps his hands very low. Just waiting to see Mayweather use his speed to blast him to the face. Then, McGregor switches stances for a moment. McGregor isn’t landing much, but Mayweather is barely throwing at all. McGregor is getting a little dirty and roughing up Mayweather. Forbes scores it for McGregor.
Overall: McGregor 20-18
First round: Ref Robert Byrd is making sure McGregor knows he wants everybody to be professional and that these are boxing rules. He did nothing but look at McGregor when he said that during the referee’s instructions. McGregor rushes him and starts throwing punches. He’s got Mayweather in the corner and Mayweather is moving up and down and not getting hit with anything. The first 30 seconds has been good for McGregor. So, hey, it’s already a victory for him. I’m nt sure Mayweather has thrown a punch through the first minute. It’s also obvious McGregor is much bigger. Then, he puts his hands behind his back 90 seconds in. Mayweather doesn’t bite. I don’t believe I’m going to write this, but McGregor wins this round. Forbes scores it for McGregor.
Overall: McGregor 10-9
Floyd Mayweather ringwalk: He’s wearing a ski mask, so it’s hard to see his expression. He’s just kind of looking around as he makes his walk. And, um, that’s pretty much it.
