Following Adrien Broner’s decisive loss to Mikey Garcia last night, former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik doesn’t think the former can rebound.
“It’s a huge loss for Broner,” Pavlik told FightHype.com.
“I’m a big boxing fan and I’m still a fan of Broner. Broner brought some excitement to the boxing world and he’s got the talent and everything else but this was devastating.”
“… Most of the losses are to top guys.”
“… [But] especially losing the way he lost tonight. It is really gonna be a setback for him.”
“I really hope he can comeback someway… To be, um, a gatekeeper I guess.
Defiant, Broner insists he will continue his career and his quest for title glory.
Perhaps he can be a gloried gatekeeper of sorts?
Kelly made a fine point, suggesting Adrien can’t beat big names. Although he did defeat Paulie Malignaggi, he struggled mightily even though Paulie was believed to be a bit past his prime.
Also, as Kelly stated, the way Broner lost last night was disappointing.
He fought like a lion when Marcos Maidana handed him his first defeat in December 2013. He had nothing to be ashamed of as he hurt his foe several times. But in his subsequent losses to Shawn Porter and, now, Mikey Garcia, Broner was tentative and often unwilling to let his hands go.
He seemed content to go distance instead of going for broke.
When your stock is heavily dependant on bravado and swag, you must make a better attempt to back it up, win or lose.
Even as a gatekeeper, Broner must do better if he wants to remain some semblance of a big attraction.
