Roach Man Moves to Top of Pound-4-Pound list of Trainers
If Manny PacMan defeats Marco Antonio Barrera this weekend, and I think he will, let the debates begin as who will be boxing’s #1 LB-4-LB fighter in the World. Personally, I cast my vote for the Li’l Thrilla from Manila.
They say in boxing, your only as good as your last fight. So where does that leave the trainers? Where is a list of the top corner aces in the game? You’re only going to find it on BoxingConfidential.com.
1) Freddie Roach. New this week in the Numero Uno position. Roach moves up after Steward’s Underboss gets whacked out in AC. Roach made his bones under the late, great Mister Eddie Futch. I don’t need to say any more!
2) Emanuel Steward. Like Mr. Futch, Detroit guy. Right game plan, wrong fighter. Don’t blame Steward for Taylor’s loss to Ghostly Pavlik. Taylor couldn’t keep fighting 147 pounders forever! Steward remains the Goldfather from Kronk but will be sitting in the #2 position until he gets back in the drivers seat with Klitschko.
3) Miguel Diaz. Ya I know he is a cutman, but this guy gives better advice than half the Bozos he works the corner under!
4) Ronnie Shields. Ronnie was the third man behind Lou Duva and Georgie Benton for more years than I could count on fingers and toes. Now he and Evander Holyfield try to make fifth heavyweight title magic in Moscow.
5) Eddie Mustapha Muhammad. Take no shit, get in your ass, “WAKE UP, ITS FIGHT TIME!” The man I would want in my corner.
6) Panama Lewis. The Legend learned the craft from Ray Arcel and Freddie Brown. The Legend is a master motivator and can see things not many eyes can see.
7) Dan Birmingham. He may only be best known for training Winky Wright, but Dan knows his stuff!
8) Joe Goosen. He knows training like big bro Dan knows promoting.
9) Tommy Brooks. Another who cut his teeth in the Main Events family.
10) Jack Loew. He may only be known for training Pavlik at this point, but any guy who believes in sledgehammers and 800 pound tires makes my Top 10! Old school baby!
Floyd Mayweather Sr. and Roger Mayweather dont make the cut. They only know how to train a fighter one way, the Mayweather way. Sorry. That just does not apply to all fighters.
